Heads held high, the newly evolved Kou and Yuki strode confidently into Pewter City, their master dancing about excitedly behind them. As they left the dark, damp evergreens of Viridian Forest, tall mountains towered up in their place. Rugged rocks and trees lined the path they strode on, leading them into the very heart of yet another small city.
"Ooh a mart!" Ame chirped, spotting the essential shop nearby. "Guys I need to g-"
Psst. Ame turned suddenly to see a man standing nearby, spraying mist over his plants.
"Do you know what I'm doing?" he whispered menacingly, waving the cold mist close to them. Kou grabbed his tail and held it close to him, cradling the precious flame protectively. Ame stared at him blankly.
   "Uhh… no." she said.
"Hey you!" yelled another voice, and a young man ran towards them waving his arms frantically. Ame rolled her eyes wearily. "Did you check out the museum?" he questioned, hands waving readily.
"Uh, considering we just got here, no."
"No… really? YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GO!" he proclaimed, grabbing Ame by the arm and taking off, much to the surprise of Kou.
"Yuki!" Kou yelled, grabbing her attention. She took off, soaring above Ame and the man before diving to grasp his arm, driving her talons deeply into his skin.
   "ARRGH!"
"Waaah! Yuki, no!" Ame squeaked, suddenly ceasing her pleas to snicker sadistically as she watched the strange man flail about manically, attempting to shake Yuki off. Kou arrived shortly after Yuki released her grip and chased the man away from her trainer.
"Did she get him?" he asked, looking up to Ame curiously.
"Seems so." Ame smiled, resting her hand on his head lovingly. "I'm going to go and buy some supplies in the mart, you can go exploring with Yuki if you like, just don't leave the city." Kou nodded and watched her wander into the Pokémart, turning his head to survey the city. The city museum towered majestically ahead, sealing some old age secrets within. Uninterested, he drifted towards the fence beside him, peering through the gaps to admire the Pewter City Pokémon Gym in all its glory.

"Help! Someone help!" a small voice cried. Ame's ears pricked up as she turned to face the young boy running at her. "Please help me! My Rattata!" Ame raised a finger to her lips to silence the boy.
"Calm yourself." she soothed. "What's wrong?"
"My Rattata! Someone stole it!" Tears streamed down his face as he stood helplessly before the stranger. Ame sighed, knowing full well that Silva was behind this. She kneeled before the young boy and rested her hands upon his shoulders.
"I… I'll get him back to you." she said with uncertainty. The boy's eyes widened as they lit up.
"Really?! Oh thank you!" Ame smiled when he hugged her tightly.
   "I'll try."

"Do you think we'll be challenging the gym, Kou?" said Yuki, who had returned and landed atop the fence Kou was peering through.
"Have fun?" he asked. "And maybe… Ame knows a lot, don't you think…?" Yuki looked down at him curiously.
"What do you mean?" Kou shook his head, hearing footsteps approaching from behind them. Yuki turned her head to look at Ame, who drew closer. "Are we taking on the gym, Ame?"
"I think so…" Ame responded. "I have a few things to explain to you about our objective thus far… I honestly forgot about it, all of this excitement." Ame admitted, smiling sheepishly. Kou smirked. "I think we should pay a trip to the Pokémon Center and get you guys healed up. But first…" Ame reached into her bag and pulled out two Pokéballs, each inscribed with the symbol of Kou and Yuki's type – a curling flame and an elegant wing. "Aren't they awesome?!" Ame bleated, showing off her latest purchase. "For a little extra, the Pokémart inscribe Pokéballs with whatever you want!" Kou and Yuki looked at each other before looking to Ame with curiosity.
"…We have to get in them?" Yuki asked sincerely. "Can't we walk with you?" Ame waved the Pokéballs about frantically.
"I bought them so that it's easier for the nurses to heal you up at Pokémon Centers. The technology there is really advanced, and it's easier on you guys too. Do you not…" Kou reached up and took his own personalized Pokéball in his claws, looking up to Ame admirably.
"It would make the whole process a lot faster." Kou concluded. "I'd rather not have to be scrutinized every time. Thank you." Yuki beat her wings and hovered into the air, grasping the remaining Pokéball in her talons.
"You're right." Yuki said apologetically, her eyes closing solemnly. ", I'm sorry for judging you." Ame reached up and ruffled the crown of her head playfully.
"Hey, don't worry. I'd never stop you guys from doing what you want to do." Ame insisted, smiling at Yuki when she opened her eyes. Kou touched the circular button at the front of the Pokéball and was suddenly enveloped in a red light, his form immediately absorbed. As it dropped to the ground with a thud, Yuki too clicked her Pokéball open with her talon and disappeared. Ame picked up their Pokéballs and rushed to the Pokémon Center nearby. Inside, she handed the Pokéballs to the nurse, who insisted on repeating the same words the first nurse uttered to her in Viridian City, much to her irritation.
"Do do doo do doo…" Ame chimed along with the machine as it worked on healing her Pokémon. Ignoring the nurses 'we hope to see you again!' farewell, Ame moved towards the exit, overhearing a phone conversation on her way out.
"Team Rocket is at Mt. Moon?!" the man exclaimed, his voice fading to silence as the door slid shut. Ame pondered his words in her mind as she begun to walk back towards the Pokémart, releasing Kou and Yuki from their Pokéballs as she walked.
"Thank goodness!" Yuki said with relief, taking off to the skies to stretch her wings.
"It's awfully cramped in there." Kou concurred, flexing his wrists with a click.
"Alright I'm sorry." Ame stopped and looked over at the Pokémon gym with a smirk. "Let's do this!" Kou pumped his fist, just as he and Ame did the first time they set out on their adventure.
"Alright! Let's kick some tail!" he proclaimed, scrabbling his way over the fence and into the Pokémon gym. Yuki quickly descended and perched on the highlighted wrist of Ame, who held her added weight with ease.
"Hey, wait for me!" Ame yelled, hopping over the fence ready to face Brock, the rock-solid gym leader.
